In the story "Eveline" by James Joyce, there is a lot of foreshadowing and events that hint at the "unexpected" end to the story. While it might seem like Eveline's decision to stay at her home instead of going with Frank is sudden and an impulsive, there are many aspects of the story that allow the reader to guess the outcome. For instance, at the beginning of the story, Eveline is sitting in her house, solemnly looking at the street and thinking about her decision. This shows that she is undecided about what to do and she is unsure of herself. Another aspect of the story that explains her decision is her relationship with her father. Because of her bad experience with men, one is able to guess that Eveline will have some issues trusting Frank. Also, her experience with her father might also be why Eveline becomes fond of Frank so quickly. She may be clinging to Frank because of her need for a stable male figure in her life. The last hint that Eveline and Frank's relationship will end with Frank leaving her is the fact that Frank is a sailor. He talks about his job a lot to her, and how he travels a lot, which shows that he is dedicated to his job and that he has to move around with his job. There is also the stereotype that sailors will always love the sea more than anything. The fact that Frank is a sailor spells disaster for their relationship right from the get-go. So, really even before the story finishes, the reader is able to make inferences about how the tale will end.
