Baptism scenes in literature can be found in literature where a character is immersed or comes into contact with water, and comes out with new qualities. A baptism scene occurs in Kate Chopin's The Awakening. The main character in this novel, Edna Pontieller, learns how to swim in one scene. This scene is when she realizes her personal power, and her individuality. These ideas carry over to her everyday life as she realizes that she does not have to be constrained by society because she is a woman. Edna is noticeably different after her swimming experience, which makes it a very easy to spot a baptism scene.
